The person who originally commissioned the construction of this mosque, and its exact date, are unknown, however it is registered in a document dated 1557. In 1563 it was repaired by the governor of Maraş, Osman Pasha, and further major renovations took place in 1804. It is thought that the mosque was originally built from wood, hence the name Tahtani or Tahtali (wooden) Mosque.
