Karatarla Mosque was originally built as a "mescit" (place of prayer), but in 1621 it was enlarged and converted to a mosque. The mosque then took its present form in 1775. It is also known as Zincirli (Chained) Mosque.
The mosque had an earth roof until the 20th Century when, during the Republic period, it was covered with roof tiles. The mosque is rectangular in design, divided widthways into two sections, each running parallel to the kiblah (direction of Mecca). The building is noted for its black and white stonework. In front of the "mihrab" (prayer niche) is a series of consecutive domes.
